End 2 End in 10 Team Cyclists in training for charity challenge

TEN is the magic number for a group of Barnstaple cyclists gearing up for an epic charity ride this summer.
The 10 riders will be attempting to bike the entire length of the UK mainland, covering a pedal-punishing 1,050 miles from John O’ Groats to Land’s End in just 10 days.

Andy Unstead, Ian Dowling, Tony Vesty, Andy Brock, Colin Dart, Mark Henderson, Adam Jewels, Jon Gay, Pete Nancekivell and Andi Timothy will cycle an average of 105 miles per day at speeds of around 23mph during their End 2 End in 10 fund-raising challenge.

Setting off on August 16, they hope to raise hope to raise £30,000, spilt between three charities, North Devon Hospice, Children’s Hospice South West and Families For Children.

“We are all seasoned cyclists but none of us have done anything quite like this before,” said team member Mark Henderson.“We’ve all done 100-mile rides before but getting back and doing it all again for 10 days is going to be something else. There’s going to be a lot of pain.”

Fellow rider Andy Unstead said the ride would wear down the hearts and minds of even the most dedicated athlete.

“Cycling over 1,000 miles in a mere 10 days is a challenge, even if you are a keen cyclist,” he said.
“But all of the team without exception have come into contact with at least one of our chosen three charities at some point in their life and this is the real driver and passion for the challenge that lies ahead.
“We will give everything we have to ensure that our ride is completed on schedule and that it also raises both awareness and vital funds for three extremely worthy charities.”

The team will be supported throughout the event by a two man back-up vehicle carrying food, drink, tools, bike parts and even spare bikes to ensure that the ride runs as smoothly as possible.

The whole ride will also be captured on video by a two-man film crew, who will be on hand to record the highs and lows of the ride each day. A “fly on the wall” documentary will be available to buy after the event, with all proceeds being donated to the three charities.

The team will be joined on the last 50-mile stretch to Land’s End by a host of cyclists from North Devon and Cornwall, where a big reception is planned at the finish.

A special “Welcome Home” party is being held at the Barnstaple Hotel on August 27.

On Thursday, eight of the cyclists took time out from their grueling training schedules to meet up on Barnstaple Square to mark the official countdown to the August event.

Emma Lowe, a community fund-raiser at North Devon Hospice said the charity was delighted to be chosen as a beneficiary of the challenge.

“What these guys are doing is just amazing,” she said.

“John O’Groats to Land’s End is a notoriously difficult cycle and to attempt to complete it in 10 days shows just how much commitment and enthusiasm these guys have.

“Many of the team have completed North Devon Hospice’s Coast2Coast event for the last two years, but this is another huge step up so we wish them all the best with it.”
